Loading ZIP outlines…

ZipZoomer finds every ZIP code within 30 miles of any U.S. ZIP code, shows them on a map with their real outlines, and gives you the list to copy or download as a CSV file. A 30-mile circle covers about 2,827 square miles, roughly the whole urbanized area around most U.S. downtowns plus some of the countryside beyond. It is about a 40 to 45 minute drive on open roads. Around 40% of ZIP codes have a 30-mile circle that reaches into another state.

The map above opens on a 30-mile radius around 10001 in New York, NY, which takes 759 ZIP codes with about 16.1 million people in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York.

What a 30-mile radius is used for

A 30-mile radius in the largest metros makes a long list: 759 ZIP codes around Manhattan. To keep it workable, uncheck PO Box and single-organization ZIP codes in the list panel; they have few or no residents. Download it with Include city and county ticked to sort it by county in a spreadsheet.

30 miles across the country

Over all 41,063 ZIP codes, the median count within 30 miles is 69; the largest is 778, around 07031 in North Arlington, NJ. 99.7% have another ZIP code within 30 miles, and for 40.4% the 30-mile list spans a state line.

Thirty miles here is a straight line between center points (where each ZIP code’s number or dot sits on the map), not driving distance. Population is from the 2020 Census.

Questions and answers

How many states can a 30-mile radius reach?

Around 10001 in Manhattan it reaches three: New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, for 759 ZIP codes and 16.1 million people. Nationwide, 40.4% of ZIP codes have at least one ZIP code from another state within 30 miles. ZipZoomer takes ZIP codes from every state the circle touches.

How do I compare two locations 30 miles out?

Run a radius from the first ZIP code and note the count and population in the list panel, then press Clear all ZIPs and run the second. Or add both: a ZIP code inside both circles appears once in the list, so a total below the sum of the two shows how much they overlap.

Why does the map show more ZIP codes than this table?

The app’s default rule, Touching, also takes ZIP codes the circle only partly covers; the table and the map above use Center in.

Can I start 30 miles from a spot, not a ZIP code?

Yes. Choose Circle, hold SHIFT and drag outward from the spot until the readout shows 30 mi; on a phone, hold Add with one finger and draw with another.
