ZipZoomer ZIP codes within 50 miles of any ZIP code

Loading ZIP outlines…

ZipZoomer finds every ZIP code within 50 miles of any U.S. ZIP code, shows them on a map with their real outlines, and gives you the list to copy or download as a CSV file. Fifty miles is about an hour’s drive and covers about 7,854 square miles, more than the whole state of Connecticut. A 50-mile circle around a big city holds the metro area and the smaller towns around it; in the rural West it may still hold only a few dozen ZIP codes. More than half of all ZIP codes (58.2%) have a 50-mile circle that crosses a state line.

The map above opens on a 50-mile radius around 69361 in Scottsbluff, NE, which takes 25 ZIP codes with about 66,000 people in Nebraska and Wyoming.

What a 50-mile radius is used for

At 50 miles, rural lists are still short and urban lists run to hundreds. Lists this size usually go into ad or mailing tools that take ZIP codes in bulk, so check how many ZIP codes the tool accepts at once before you paste, and split the list if needed.

50 miles across the country

Over all 41,063 ZIP codes, the median count within 50 miles is 177; the largest is 1,187, around 08844 in Hillsborough, NJ. 99.9% have another ZIP code within 50 miles, and for 58.2% the 50-mile list spans a state line.

Fifty miles here is a straight line between center points (where each ZIP code’s number or dot sits on the map), not driving distance. Population is from the 2020 Census.

Questions and answers

Why does the map open on Scottsbluff, Nebraska?

To show how far 50 miles reaches in the rural West: the circle around 69361 holds 25 ZIP codes and about 66,000 people, and it crosses into Wyoming. The same circle around 60601 in Chicago holds 430 ZIP codes in four states. Type your own ZIP code in the search box to see yours.

Is 50 miles about an hour’s drive?

On rural highways, roughly. In and around big cities it is often longer, and mountains, lakes and bays can make the trip by road much longer than the straight line. The street map on ZipZoomer shows the roads near the edge of the circle when you zoom in.

Why does the map show more ZIP codes than this table?

The app’s default rule, Touching, also takes ZIP codes the circle only partly covers; the table and the map above use Center in.

Can I start 50 miles from a spot, not a ZIP code?

Yes. Choose Circle, hold SHIFT and drag outward from the spot until the readout shows 50 mi; on a phone, hold Add with one finger and draw with another.
