The short version
- You don't need an account, and we never ask for your name, email or payment details.
- The ZIP codes you select stay in your own browser. They are not sent to us or to our analytics.
- We measure how people find and use the site (visits, where they came from, and which features they use) so we can improve it and tell more people about it.
- We don't sell your personal information or share it for targeted advertising.
What stays on your device
Your selected ZIP codes and settings (such as the export format) are saved in your browser's local storage, so they're still there when you come back. Clearing your browser's site data removes them.
If you use "Copy share link", the ZIP list is written into the link itself. Anyone you send the link to can see that list. When a share link is opened, the list is set aside before any analytics load, so it is not sent to analytics.
What we measure
Google Analytics, run through Cloudflare's Zaraz service, records:
- pages viewed, and how you arrived (the referring site or search engine, and campaign tags in the link, if any);
- your approximate location (country, region, city), worked out from your IP address. Google says it doesn't store the IP address itself;
- your device type, browser, operating system, screen size and language;
- actions on the map: selecting ZIPs, drawing a circle, lasso or radius (and which edge rule was set), using search, importing a file, and copying, downloading or sharing a list. We record the kind of action and how many ZIPs it involved, never which ZIP codes or what you typed.
To tell new visits from return visits, Google Analytics stores a random identifier in your browser. It isn't linked to your name or any account. We keep Google Analytics data for 14 months. Google's own practices are described in Google's privacy policy.
Cloudflare Web Analytics counts page views and measures page speed without cookies or identifiers. Cloudflare keeps this data for six months.
Services that handle your connection
Like any website, the services that deliver the page see your IP address and browser details as part of each request:
- Cloudflare hosts the site and the street map files (maps.thinglab.app) and runs Zaraz (Cloudflare's privacy policy);
- Google Analytics, as described above.
Your choices
- You can block or delete cookies and site data in your browser settings, or use a content blocker. The map works the same either way.
- We don't sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising, as those terms are used in California law. If that ever changes, we will update this page first and offer a way to opt out, and we will honor the Global Privacy Control signal.
Children
This site is a business tool and isn't directed at children under 16.
Changes and contact
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Questions: policies@thinglab.app.
