ZipZoomer ZIP codes within 20 miles of any ZIP code

Loading ZIP outlines…

ZipZoomer finds every ZIP code within 20 miles of any U.S. ZIP code, shows them on a map with their real outlines, and gives you the list to copy or download as a CSV file. A 20-mile circle covers about 1,257 square miles, about the size of a mid-sized county. In a metro area that is the city and most of its suburbs; in farm country it reaches the next town or two. By car it is roughly a half-hour trip, longer in city traffic.

The map above opens on a 20-mile radius around 90012 in Los Angeles, CA, which takes 414 ZIP codes with about 8.2 million people.

How to list the ZIP codes within 20 miles

  1. Search a ZIP code in the box at the top of the map and press Radius next to it.
  2. Type 20 in the card’s distance box (mi, or switch to km). A yellow preview shows the ZIP codes it takes.

What a 20-mile radius is used for

Twenty miles is where a radius starts to take in neighboring towns with centers of their own. If your list should stop at a county or city line, add the radius, then click the ZIP codes beyond the line to take them out, or remove them in one go with a lasso.

20 miles across the country

Over all 41,063 ZIP codes, the median count within 20 miles is 32; the largest is 583, around 10027 in New York, NY. 99.1% have another ZIP code within 20 miles, and for 28.1% the 20-mile list spans a state line.

Twenty miles here is a straight line between center points (where each ZIP code’s number or dot sits on the map), not driving distance. Population is from the 2020 Census.

Questions and answers

Does almost every ZIP code have another one within 20 miles?

Yes. Using center points, 99.1% of U.S. ZIP codes have at least one other ZIP code within 20 miles. The rest are large rural ZIP codes, about a third of them in Alaska and most of the rest in the mountain and desert West, where a 20-mile circle holds only the ZIP code you started from.

How long does it take to drive 20 miles?

About 25 to 35 minutes on highways and suburban roads, and an hour or more across a big city at rush hour. ZipZoomer measures straight-line distance, so a list for a drive-time limit may need a smaller radius in dense areas or near water.

Why does the map show more ZIP codes than this table?

The app’s default rule, Touching, also takes ZIP codes the circle only partly covers; the table and the map above use Center in.

Can I start 20 miles from a spot, not a ZIP code?

Yes. Choose Circle, hold SHIFT and drag outward from the spot until the readout shows 20 mi; on a phone, hold Add with one finger and draw with another.
