ZipZoomer Paste a list of ZIP codes and see them on the map

Loading ZIP outlines…

ZipZoomer turns a list of ZIP codes into a map: paste them, or import a file, and each ZIP code lights up in yellow with its real outline. You see at once where your customers, stores or targets are, which ZIP codes are missing between them, and which entries are not ZIP codes at all.

The list panel is open on this page with the cursor in the box (on a phone, the list slides up from the bottom). Paste your list there.

How to map your list

  1. Copy your ZIP codes from a spreadsheet column, an email or a document.
  2. Paste them into the Selected ZIPs box in the list panel (on a phone, open it with the ZIPs button at the top). Commas, spaces, tabs, semicolons and new lines all work as separators. The map moves to show them.
  3. Or press Import a file of ZIPs and choose a .txt, .csv or .tsv file.
  4. Check what was flagged. Entries that are not five-digit ZIP codes on the map are listed under the box as “Not recognized as ZIP codes”; fix them or press Remove from list.
  5. Add or trim on the map. Click ZIP codes, or draw a circle or lasso, to fill gaps between your ZIP codes.
  6. Share or export. Copy share link, Save map image, Copy list or Download file.

What the list box accepts

Anything else with a digit in it, such as a four-digit number, a phone number or a Canadian postal code, is flagged rather than guessed at. So is a five-digit code that is not a current ZIP code on the map. Words without digits are skipped.

From a spreadsheet

Select the ZIP column in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets, copy it and paste it into the box. Watch for lost leading zeros: spreadsheets often store 02134 as 2134, which is flagged. ZIP codes in New England, New Jersey and Puerto Rico start with 0. Format the column as text, or use a formula such as =TEXT(A2,"00000"), before copying. If the file has other columns with numbers in them (street numbers, phone numbers), copy only the ZIP column so they are not flagged.

What you see on the map

Every ZIP code in your list is highlighted in yellow, with dots for PO Box and single-organization ZIP codes. The panel shows how many counties and states the list covers and its 2020 Census population. Point at a ZIP code on a computer to see its city and county. To compare two lists, map one, press Copy share link, then Clear all ZIPs and map the other.

Exporting a cleaned list

After fixing flagged entries and adding or removing ZIP codes on the map, export the result: comma, tab or new-line separators, optional quotes, sorted by ZIP number or in the order added, or a table with city, state, county and type for a spreadsheet. Download file saves a .csv, .tsv or .txt file.

Questions and answers

How many ZIP codes can I paste?

There is no set limit. A paste of a few thousand ZIP codes is read in a moment, and so is the whole country, all 41,063 ZIP codes.

Does it accept ZIP+4 codes?

Yes. A code such as 10001-2345 is read as 10001. The exported list has five-digit ZIP codes.

Can I map Canadian postal codes?

No. ZipZoomer covers U.S. ZIP codes in the 50 states, Washington, DC and Puerto Rico. Canadian postal codes are flagged as not recognized.

Why are some of my ZIP codes not recognized?

Usually a lost leading zero (2134 instead of 02134), a typo, or a ZIP code that is not on the map: military APO and FPO codes, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and ZIP codes retired by USPS. The flagged entries are listed under the box.

Does pasting replace my current list?

Pasting adds to what is in the box. To start fresh, press Clear all ZIPs first, or select all the text in the box and paste over it. Undo brings back the previous list either way.

Is my list uploaded anywhere?

No. It stays in your browser. Only Copy share link puts it into a link, and only people you send that link to see it.
