What a 100-mile radius is used for

A 100-mile list can run to thousands of ZIP codes. The map shows them all, and Download file saves the whole list at once; new-line separators paste straight into a spreadsheet column. Share link puts the list in a link you can send to a colleague.

100 miles across the country

Over all 41,063 ZIP codes, the median count within 100 miles is 600; the largest is 2,518, around 07890 in Branchville, NJ. 100.0% have another ZIP code within 100 miles, and for 82.7% the 100-mile list spans a state line.

A hundred miles here is a straight line between center points (where each ZIP code’s number or dot sits on the map), not driving distance. Population is from the 2020 Census.

Questions and answers

Can I go beyond 100 miles?

Yes, up to 200 miles (322 kilometers) in the radius card; the card says so if you type more. Beyond that, draw several circles or a lasso and add them together, or search for a state or county and add its ZIP codes. A 200-mile circle around a big city can hold several thousand ZIP codes.

How many states does a 100-mile radius reach?

Around 10001 in New York it reaches five (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts); around 59301 in Miles City, Montana, four (Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming); around 90012 in Los Angeles, only California.

Why does the map show more ZIP codes than this table?

The app’s default rule, Touching, also takes ZIP codes the circle only partly covers; the table and the map above use Center in.

Can I start 100 miles from a spot, not a ZIP code?

Yes. Choose Circle, hold SHIFT and drag outward from the spot until the readout shows 100 mi; on a phone, hold Add with one finger and draw with another.
